10 aerial duels won: Palace man put in a colossal performance against Saints – opinion
Roy Hodgson, and Crystal Palace fans, will likely be very pleased after their Premier League season started with a 1-0 victory over Southampton.
This will feel especially sweet considering the Eagles failed to win any of their last eight league matches last term.
There are plenty of individual performances that will have also left them impressed, with those from Cheikhou Kouyate and Wilfried Zaha being among them. Scott Dann is also one of those that deserves plenty of plaudits for his contribution to the win.

The 33-year-old put in a colossal performance at the heart of Palace’s defence to ensure his side kept a clean sheet.
It was a typically committed display from the 6 foot 2 in man, as was typified when he furiously shouted at his teammates when Danny Ings was afforded the space to get a header off, despite Vicente Guaita saving the effort.
That can also be clearly highlighted by two of his statistics from the match: 10 aerial duels won and eight clearances completed.
Who put in the better performance?
He also made two interceptions throughout, while no tackles were attempted, indicating how he reacted to Southampton’s attacks and made sure he could get to the ball any way he could, rather than getting tight to the attackers.
There wasn’t any mucking about on the ball either, as the Palace cult hero attempted just 25 passes throughout the whole game, completing 14.
It was a solid, no-nonsense performance from Dann, which is exactly what his side needed from him.
