56 items our fashion editor loves for autumn
Autumn is a relief, with heatwaves and family holidays behind us. It’s a season of cosy knits, nights in, crisp UK walks and crispier leaves underfoot. Flip-flops and floppy hats are dutifully stored away and replaced with cashmere, cable knits and, best of all, proper pyjamas. Another highlight is the colour scheme: burnt orange and putty pink; deep navy and grey; aubergine, burgundy and moss green. And though, this year, proper trips have been replaced with weekender breaks and staycations, the sartorial choices are just as tempting. Knitwear has never looked so stylish; Khaite’s cashmere bra and matching cardigan became modern wardrobe staples thanks to Katie Holmes, while Topshop switches up ultra-fine knits with a scoop-neck offering in ballet pink. Wear with suede combat trousers from Whistles and shearling sandals from Birkenstock, the perfect in-flight shoe. Canvas is another key fabric for the season, seen on Prada’s tote and the new balloon bag from Loewe. Don’t forget about layering – summer dresses can be updated with a roll neck underneath and styled with chunky mountain boots. For swimwear and accessories, opt for muted tones that are anything but plain: Agua by Agua Bendita’s sleek one-piece in navy broderie anglaise, Chanel’s new square-design sunglasses and Nanushka’s Budapest Club beach towel make for a brilliant (indoor) pool look.
