Henry Winter delivers verdict on Everton’s Premier League victory over Tottenham
What a start to the new Premier League season that was for Everton.
The Toffees faced a tricky opening day test away against Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham on late Sunday afternoon, and quite frankly, bossed the game from start to finish.

They were a far greater attacking threat, having 15 shots compared to the home side’s nine, and were defensively disciplined too, making twice as many tackles (18-9), and almost five times as many interceptions (19-4).
And after the game, The Times journalist Henry Winter took to Twitter to deliver his verdict on Carlo Ancelotti’s masterclass.
#efc sharper, hungrier, better organised. Pickford commanding, 2 saves & punched clearances. Allan excellent, nicking ball, re-distributing. James’ fine left foot switching play, creating chances. Calvert-Lewin tireless running + timing of leap & powerful header to decide #TOTEVE

A clean sheet, a goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and some outstanding performances from new boys like James Rodriguez and Allan really put the icing on the cake for what was a fantastic day for the Toffees.
Spurs certainly didn’t help themselves with their sluggish style, but full credit must go to Ancelotti and his team for the way they took the game to the Lilywhites and didn’t let up.
After facing Salford in the Carabao Cup in mid-week, Everton next face newly-promoted West Brom at home, who lost 3-0 to Leicester just hours before the Toffees played.
That could present a very real opportunity for them to start the new Premier League campaign with two wins from two.
