Leicester were eliminated from the Europa League after suffering an agonising 3-2 defeat to Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, meaning they drop into the Europa Conference League.

Brendan Rodgers’ side started well but Napoli opened the scoring after only four minutes. Adam Ounas marked his first start for the club since April 2019 with a low finish across Kasper Schmeichel and into the bottom corner of the net.

Eljif Elmas made it 2-0 midway through the first half. With Spartak Moscow winning 1-0 at Legia Warsaw, it leaves Leicester third in the group and with it all to do.

However, there was an immediate reply, with Jonny Evans smashing home a loose ball from eight yards out.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall volleyed Leicester level after 34 minutes. The academy graduate’s goal saw the Foxes move back up to second spot in the group as things stood at the time, relegating Napoli to third place.

Leicester found themselves behind again after 53 minutes when Elmas grabbed his second goal of the night, controlling Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s low cross before giving Schmeichel no chance with his close-range finish.

Tomas Pekhart missed a 98th-minute penalty for Legia Warsaw in the 1-0 defeat to group winners Spartak Moscow which, if scored, would have rescued second place for Leicester in a breathless end to Group C.
