Newcastle must sign dominant £27m hothead in January, he’s far better than Lascelles – opinion
According to Turkish publication Sabah, Newcastle’s summer transfer target Marcao is unhappy at Galatasaray and could leave the club in the January window.
What’s the word?
Reports in recent months had suggested that the centre-back was on the radar of the Magpies, with a deal worth around £15m supposedly close for the Brazilian.
That of course failed to materialise, with Steve Bruce’s side failing to strengthen at the heart of defence before the transfer deadline. Now however, developments surrounding Marcao could see the Tyneside club revisit their summer target when January comes around.
Should Newcastle spend £27m on Marcao in January?
Sabah claims Marcao is unhappy at Galatasaray due to not getting the wages that he wants, and is keen to leave the Turkish giants in the New Year. The report further adds that a potential fee of £27m has been mooted, and that he is expected to receive transfer offers in January.
Better than Lascelles
Having targeted the likes of Marcao and Arsenal’s Rob Holding, it was clear that Newcastle were desperately trying to bring in a new centre-back during the summer transfer window.
The fact that they didn’t means the Magpies will surely be in the market for one during January, and the latest update on Marcao suggests a deal could potentially now be struck.
And when you compare his stats to Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles, it looks favourably on the Brazilian. As per Sofascore, he won 6.8 total duels per game last season in the Turkish Super Lig, compared to just the 4.5 for the Magpies man.
As well as being dominant in the 50/50s, Marcao also averaged an impressive 1.8 interceptions and 1.5 tackles per game. Lascelles on the other hand, managed just 1.2 interceptions and 0.6 tackles per match respectively.
Part of Marcao’s game is being aggressive and on the front foot, and that can often spill over – he picked up 11 yellow cards in just 28 league games for Galatasaray last year.
If he can curb his tendency to go overboard, Newcastle could have a monster on their hands in the 24-year-old.
And in other news, Newcastle could have landed a Shearer-esque striker in this Bundesliga front-man.
