“Should have cashed in” – Many West Ham fans hammer “professional ball watcher” who “looks lost”

It probably isn’t easy being a West Ham fan at the moment.

The Hammers have had a rough couple of weeks, with Grady Diangana’s exit to West Brom followed up by a poor 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the first Premier League game of the season.

One man who struggled to really get to grips with the Magpies’ front two, was Issa Diop.

The Frenchman looked completely out of sorts at the heart of West Ham’s defence, making no tackles whatsoever and winning just two duels over the course of the 90 minutes – to put that into context, even winger Jarrod Bowen won more.

And after seeing his disappointing display, Hammers fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Hammers fans took aim at Diop’s tendency to ball watch and not react to the danger in front of him.

One supporter meanwhile admitted that the club should have cashed in on the Frenchman – reports last summer suggested Manchester United were evening eyeing the central defender up.

Amid reports West Ham are after Burnley centre-back James Tarkowsi, Diop’s performance against Newcastle on Saturday showed exactly why the England international is a wanted man.

Should West Ham spend £50m to sign Tarkowski?

The Hammers looked disjointed at the back, with Callum Wilson’s opener being such an easily avoidable one.

Tarkowski may cost big-money, but on the basis of the first game of the season, Moyes desperately needs to bring him in.
