The new VW Taos takes it to the next level for under $25k
The new Volkswagen Taos is now available in dealerships across the U.S., where it starts at $24,190.
The 2022 Taos is closely related to Volkswagens
Tiguan, albeit on a shorter wheelbase and with a shorter overall length. Not surprisingly, it also uses a smaller engine in this case, a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder rated at 158 horsepower. The new SUV comes in both front- and all-wheel-drive, the latter of which is probably preferable in the mountainous Northern New Mexico town where Taos gets its name.
The base Taos S includes LED lighting, a digital instrument cluster, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen. Surprisingly, active safety gear including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control are optional. Theyre bundled together for $995 in a package that also includes a heated steering wheel and automatic high-beam headlights.

The Taos SE adds some of those features plus larger wheels and an upsized touchscreen paired with more USB-C ports, additional audio speakers, and a few other niceties. Plan to spend $27,245 for one, though a panoramic sunroof and adaptive cruise control are optional extras.
The range tops out at the Taos SEL, which for $31,490 bundles leather seats, a larger digital instrument cluster with navigation, BeatsAudio speakers, and a few other items.
All-wheel-drive versions generally cost about $1,500 more and add a few additional features such as heated seats for the Taos S and cooled seats for the SEL.
