WATCH LIVE: Attorney General Bill Barr defends DOJ policies at long-awaited Congressional hearing
Get ready for a showdown.
After months of delays, the Democratic-led House Judiciary Committee will get the chance to ask questions to U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr who is set to defend President Trump — and himself — in a contentious hearing on Tuesday starting at 10:45 am EDT.
Barr plans to come out swinging against the Democrats for portraying him as Trump’s puppet.
“Democrats on this Committee have attempted to discredit me by conjuring up a narrative that I am simply the President’s (lackey) who disposes of criminal cases according to his instructions,” Barr wrote in his opening statement. “Judging from the letter inviting me to this hearing, that appears to be your agenda today.”
Barr is expected to defend his probe of the “origins” of the investigation into Russian collusion with the Trump presidential campaign, which Trump hopes will win some political traction before the November election.
The nation’s top law-enforcement official will also have to account for his highly unusual decision to seek to dismiss the case against Michael Flynn after the fired National Security Adviser had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his discussions with Russian envoys.
